Staghorn Fern – Platycerium bifurcatum 'Elkhorn’

One of the most gorgeous and satisfying plants to watch grow. The Staghorn Fern platycerium bifurcatum (sometimes called Elkhorn fern, but those have thinner fronds). These plants are a type of epiphytic ferns that grow in humid or tropical environments. These ferns make for an amazing ornamental adornment for any wall outside or inside (with proper watering and humidity). 

Staghorn ferns can get quite large in the wild if given space. They mainly grow two types of fronds, the leaf you see that will eventually form brown spores at the edges and the shield frond that stays at the base helping the plant grip onto a variety of surfaces. As it grows, some "fuzzy stuff" on staghorn fern leaves—often white or grayish in appearance—is actually made up of trichomes. These tiny, hair-like structures help the plant retain moisture and protect it from harsh environmental conditions. 

Staghorn's are used to tropical climates where they receive regular rainwater and humidity. Please ensure water gets thoroughly through the sphagnum moss (if mounted) or around the coconut or in the soil at least once a week - drier climates need more. Using spring or rainwater is preferred.

• Athena - Ceramic 5.5" marble planter with drainage hole and matching rose gold ceramic tray. The planter measures: 5.5" x 5.5" x 6" and weighs approximately 1.2 lbs. We recommend placing your plant in the nursery pot inside it to make it easy to water and transplant. 
• Coconut Shell - Each has a different size based on the growth and coconut shell it was placed into. If you need exact sizing after placing your order we can message you what we have available for you to select the best fit. The average coconut size is around 5" in diameter. They do very well in a bathroom due to the higher humidity so long as there is a good light source.
